Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    May 11, 2025

Title: Earning Our Wings

Main Idea:
Paul seeks to relaunch his readers by reminding them of their shared freedom in Christ.

Primary Passage:  Galatians 1:1-5
1Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2and all the brothers who are with me,
To the churches of Galatia:
3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Sermon Outline:
  • Paul opens his letter to the Galatians by reminding them of:
    • Who he is, an apostle of the victorious Christ;
      • Galatians 1:1
    • Who they are, members of Christ’s Body, the Church;
      • Galatians 1:2-3
    • Who Christ is, the One who came from the Father to earn their freedom.
      • Galatians 1:4-5

For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Romans 12:3-8.

Things to Consider:
  • Where would you put yourself on the following scale of freedom through grace? Put an “X” where you believe you are.

                    |      I am soaring on the wings of grace
                    |
                    |      I am learning how to soar
                    |
                    |      I am struggling to find my wings
                    |
                    |      I have had my wings clipped
                    |
                    |      I have no wings

  • To what degree are the most influential people in your life like the Apostle Paul (proponents of grace) versus the Judaizers (proponents of law)? What evidence led you to answer the way you did?

  • To what degree are you like the Apostle Paul versus the Judaizers in the lives of those you influence most? What evidence led you to answer the way you did?

  • As you are considering these things, what do you sense the Holy Spirit whispering to you that you really need to hear and take to heart about the grace of God in your life? Thank God for His encouragement and reminder.
