Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    January 11, 2026

Title: Giving

Main Idea:  Give to those in need with no consideration for self and God will ensure a good return on your investment.

Primary Passage:  Matthew 6:1-4

Sermon Outline:
  • Acts of righteousness are deliberate and laden with risk.
    • Matthew 6:1a (ESV)
  • The benefit to us for acts of righteousness depends on our attention to motive.
    • Matthew 6:1 (ESV)
  • Giving, prayer, and fasting are acts of righteousness that are foundational to piety, prone to hypocrisy, and require safe-guarding motivationally.
    • Matthew 6:2,5,16 (ESV)
  • When we give, we are to give, not pompously, which receives limited applause from humans,
    • Matthew 6:2 (ESV)
  • But secretly and sincerely, which brings untold rewards from God.
    • Matthew 6:3-4 (ESV)

  • For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Matthew 6:5-15.

Things to Consider: (Feel free to read Scripture passages that God brings to mind as you work through these questions)
  1. What about the sermon challenged, encouraged, or confused you? What, if anything, would you like further clarification on?
  2. Why do you suppose it is so easy to establish a bad habit and so hard to establish a good habit?
  3. What good habits have you been able to establish and how did you do it?
  4. What does the phrase “sacrificial giving” mean and how does it sit with you and why?
  5. What are we sacrificing when we “sacrificially give”?
  6. In what kinds of ways have you seen God reward you when you give to others?
