Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    July 27, 2025

Title: Hand in Glove

Main Idea:  We are judged on our works, but saved by our faith.

Primary Passage:  James 2:14-26

Sermon Outline:
  • One thing is certain from Scripture: We will be judged on our works.
    • 1 Corinthians 3:13-15
    • Matthew 25:31-36
    • Matthew 25:41-43
  • The dynamic relationship between faith and works is that…
    • Faith and works are not two separate entities, but are inextricably linked.
      • James 2:14-19
    • Faith that does not produce works is not enough.
      • James 2:20-26
    • Our works and our faith will enter the fires of judgment.
      • James 2:12-13
    • Only works of mercy, done in Christ, are effectual for salvation.
      • Matthew 7:21-23

For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Galatians 3:1-6.

Things to Consider: (Feel free to read Scripture passages that God brings to mind as you work through these questions)
  1. What about the sermon challenged, encouraged, or confused you? What, if anything, would you like further clarification on?
  2. How might you determine if a work you are about to do is being done in Christ or in the flesh?
  3. Read Ephesians 5:8-10 and Galatians 5:16-26. How can you use these passages to assist with discerning if a work you are about to do is being done in Christ or in the flesh? Give some practical examples.
  4. Share some repeated “religious” works or habits of yours that God is bringing to mind that are being done in the flesh and need to be abandoned or “recalibrated” to being done in Christ.
  5. How would you go about “recalibrating” those works to be in Christ?
  6. How do you abide in Christ and seek the Holy Spirit’s direction and power to love the one in front of you?
