Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    March 1, 2026

Title: Handcrafted for Craftsmanship

Main Idea: Though we were not saved by good works, we were saved for good works.

Primary Passage:  Ephesians 2:1-10

Sermon Outline:
  • The essential understanding of our high status in Christ is that we, who once were spiritually dead and condemned in the flesh,
    • Ephesians 2:1-3 (ESV)
  • were made spiritually alive and blessed in Christ;
    • Ephesians 2:4-7 (ESV)
  • God’s workmanship,
    • Ephesians 2:8-10a (ESV)
  • created in Christ to fulfill the works of Christ.
    • Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

  • For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Ephesians 2:11–18.

Things to Consider: (Feel free to read Scripture passages that God brings to mind as you work through these questions)
  1. What about the sermon challenged, encouraged, or confused you? What, if anything, would you like further clarification on?
  2. The sermon mentions that a butterfly could choose to live like a caterpillar. Are there any areas where you, as a believer, are choosing to live like the person you once were, and how can you change that this week?
  3. How does understanding that you are God's "workmanship" (his masterpiece or poem) for a specific purpose change the way you view your self-worth and identity?
  4. What "good works" do you believe God has prepared in advance for you to do, and how can you actively discern and walk in those works?
  5. The sermon states that good works are a "get to," not a "have to." How can you shift your motivation for serving others from obligation to joy and gratitude?

As always, feel free to contact Charles if you have questions or concerns regarding the message; its content, meaning, or application to your life. The easiest way to do that is by submitting a Bridge Card at steamboatbiblechurch.com/bridgecard.
