Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    July 20, 2025

Title: “You’re Dead to Me”

Main Idea:  As a result of our faith in Christ, our death sentence has either been served in full or it hasn’t been served at all.

Primary Passage:  Galatians 2:15-21

Sermon Outline:
  • We are guilty of sin and our sentence is death.
    • Galatians 2:15-16a
    • James 2:10
  • We placed our faith in Christ to graciously serve out our death sentence on our behalf.
    • Galatians 2:15-16
  • Our faith in Christ has only two possible lawful outcomes:
    • Outcome A: Our death sentence has been served, freeing us from any further legal recourse.
      • Galatians 2:19-20
    • Outcome B: Our death sentence has not been served, and Christ’s death is of no benefit to us.
      • Galatians 2:17-18, 21
  • For next week’s message: Read and reflect on James 2:14-26.

Things to Consider: (Feel free to read Scripture passages that God brings to mind as you work through these questions)
  1. What about the sermon challenged, encouraged, or confused you? What, if anything, would you like further clarification on?
  2. If God were to literally say “Your old you is dead to Me” (speaking of your old self who died with Christ at your point of faith), how would that affect how you relate to Him, if at all?
  3. To what degree do you agree with the notion of there only being two possible lawful outcomes of our faith in Christ? If you think there are other options, what would they be and what Scriptural references might you present as evidence to consider? If you strongly agree with only two possible outcomes, how does that concept impact you? How will you view yourself, speak to yourself, live your life, or relate to God differently than you have in the past?
  4. In what ways have you been thinking or living as if your old you is not dead to God? How has that impacted your walk with God?
  5. What do you think Paul means by the following statements (v. 20)? “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” How do you suppose he lived his life to reflect that belief? If you were to emulate that, how would you live your life differently?
