Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    January 25, 2026

Title: Prayer (Part 2)

Main Idea:  Pray, individually and corporately, with no consideration for self, and God will ensure a good return on your investment.

Primary Passage:  Matthew 6:1, 5-15

Sermon Outline:
  • Our acts of righteousness are meant to be done in secret and rewarded by God.
    • Matthew 6:1 (ESV)
  • When we pray, we are to pray individually in private…
    • Matthew 6:5-6 (ESV)
  • And corporately in contrition.
    • Matthew 6:7-8 (ESV)
    • Matthew 6:9-13 (ESV)
    • Matthew 6:14-15 (ESV)
    • Acts 21:2-6 (ESV)
    • 1 Corinthians 4:5 (ESV)

  • For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Matthew 6:16-21.

Things to Consider: (Feel free to read Scripture passages that God brings to mind as you work through these questions)
  1. What about the sermon challenged, encouraged, or confused you? What, if anything, would you like further clarification on?
  2. Do you think corporate prayer is important to God and/or the healthy functioning of a church and why? Can you think of any Bible passages to support your view?
  3. How do you internally react to the thought of participating in corporate prayer and why? What are your biggest joys and “hang-ups” with it?
  4. How can we, together, grow in praying corporately in a manner that is not repetitious, stale, or presumptuous (i.e. in contrition)?

As always, feel free to contact Charles if you have questions or concerns regarding the message; its content, meaning, or application to your life. The easiest way to do that is by submitting a Bridge Card at steamboatbiblechurch.com/bridgecard.
