Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    August 3, 2025

Title: Seeing is Believing

Main Idea:  God’s presence and power are experienced through faith, not works.

Primary Passage:  Galatians 3:1-9

Sermon Outline:
  • Works-based righteousness is enticingly deceptive.
    • Galatians 3:1
  • We can resist the deception of a works-based righteousness on the basis that our own experience proves that we are…
    • Reconciled through faith,
      • Galatians 3:2
    • Sanctified through faith,
      • Galatians 3:3-4
    • Empowered through faith,
      • Galatians 3:5
    • As it was with Abraham.
      • Galatians 3:6-9

  • For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Galatians 3:10-14.

Things to Consider: (Feel free to read Scripture passages that God brings to mind as you work through these questions)
  1. What about the sermon challenged, encouraged, or confused you? What, if anything, would you like further clarification on?
  2. For you, which of the following deceptions are most enticing and what makes it so?
    1. We are reconciled to God through works.
    2. We are sanctified through works.
    3. We are empowered through works.
  3. What about your upbringing and/or exposure to Christianity laid the foundation for its attraction to you?
  4. Give some specific concrete examples of statements you’ve heard or practices you’ve seen in churches that perpetuate the deception.
  5. What passages in Scripture come to mind that refute the deception.
  6. What about your Christian experience has shown the deception to be wrong?
