Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    May 4, 2025

Title: The God of Grace

Main Idea:
The Biblical view is that God is both One and Three at the same time, but in different respects. With respect to His essence, attributes, and purpose, He is One. Yet, with respect to Persons and functions, He is Three.

Primary Passage:  Various

Sermon Outline:
  • The doctrine of God, as monotheism, has been an area where heresy has abounded, due to the paradoxical nature of the Triune Godhead.
  • Nontrinitarian Views
    • Subordinationism
      • A belief that asserts that the Son and the Holy Spirit are subordinate to God the Father in nature and being
    • Modalistic Monarchianism (or Modalism)
      • Considers God to be one while appearing and working through the different "modes" of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
    • Dynamic Monarchianism (or Adoptionism)
      • Holds that Jesus was adopted as the Son of God at his baptism, his transfiguration, his resurrection, or his ascension
  • The notion that it is contradictory to say that God is both One and Three at the same time is due to faulty logic.
    • The law of logical noncontradiction essentially states that something cannot be both “A” and “non-A” at the same time and in the same respect
      • Something can be both “A” and “non-A” at the same time, but in different respects
      • Something can be both “A” and “non-A” in the same respect, but at different times
      • Something cannot be both “A” and “non-A” at the same time and in the same respect
  • The view from the whole of Scripture is that God is both One and Three at the same time, but in different respects
    • God is One and the same in essence, attributes, and purpose
    • Yet God is Three and distinct in Persons and functions
  • Main Idea: The Biblical view is that God is both One and Three at the same time, but in different respects. With respect to His essence, attributes, and purpose, He is One. Yet, with respect to Persons and functions, He is Three.

For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Galatians 1:1-5.
