Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    March 30, 2025

Main Idea:   Jesus came to fulfill justice, so he could offer grace.

Key Verses:   “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." Matthew 5:17

Bible Reading:    17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Mathew 16:13-27.

Things to Consider:
  1. Think back over your previous day or two. Recount your actions in sequence. How often did you find yourself acting in ways that were selfish versus loving toward God or others?
  2. As you recount each of those times, what is your internal response? Do you feel shame, guilt, remorse, apathy; what?
  3. To what extent do your thoughts regarding your failures of selfishness make you want to try harder to love God and others? If you feel motivated to try harder to be loving, why? What do you hope to achieve?
  4. Do you have the power and authority to achieve your goal? In other words, do you think it’s possible to achieve it? Have you tried to do so in the past? If so, how did it go?
  5. How does the notion that Jesus has already paid for every one of the failures you recounted impact you? What about the notion that you will never be more or less righteous in God’s eyes, regardless of how often you fail?
  6. WIth that knowledge, how might you adjust your hopes regarding any changes you might want to make? What would your adjusted goal be?
  7. If you are comfortable doing so, ask for God’s help to succeed.
