Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon:    September 28, 2025

Title: Trinkets for Treasures

Main Idea:  Don’t settle for anything less than freedom in Christ.

Primary Passage:  Galatians 4:8-11

Sermon Outline:
  • Paul was afraid that his sacrificial investment in the gentile Galatians was all for nothing….
    • Galatians 4:11 (ESV)
  • because they were trading their loving relationship with the One, True, and Living God...
    • Galatians 4:8-9 (ESV)
  • for selfish re-enslavement to yet another, false, and dead religion.
    • Galatians 4:9-10 (ESV)

  • For next week’s message: Read and reflect on Galatians 4:12-20.

Things to Consider: (Feel free to read Scripture passages that God brings to mind as you work through these questions)
  1. What about the sermon challenged, encouraged, or confused you? What, if anything, would you like further clarification on?
  2. What is it about works-based systems of earning the approval of so-called gods that seems so attractive to humans?
  3. What is it about a faith-based relationship of grace and love with One, True God that seems so repulsive to humans?
  4. Having entered into a relationship with God by faith, what do you think Paul was really hoping for with regard to their relationship with God?
  5. When, if ever, have you struggled with accepting your freedom in Christ, and how did it manifest itself in your life?
  6. Where do you struggle the most with relating to God and how much does either shame or pride play a role?
  7. How might you go about embracing your freedom in Christ?

As always, feel free to contact Charles if you have questions or concerns regarding the message; its content, meaning, or application to your life. The easiest way to do that is by submitting a Bridge Card at steamboatbiblechurch.com/bridgecard.
