Mustard Seed Kingdom - book of matthew - Lesson #46

Sermon Notes

Date of Sermon: March 3, 2018

Summary: Jesus’ kingdom will start small, but grow large.

Key Verse:  “"It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches."   Matthew 13:25

Bible Reading:  31 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”33 He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.” 34 All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet:
“I will open my mouth in parables;
I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”

  - Matthew 13:31-35

Message Outline:
  1. A Kingdom Small But Influential  (verses 31-33)
    1. A planted mustard seed (verse 31)
    2. Big as a tree  (verse 32)
    3. Small but influential  (verse 33)
  2. A Kingdom Predicted in the Old Testament  (verses 34-35)
    1. Speaking in parables (verse 34)
    2. Now a new kingdom, but one predicted of old (verse 35)

Important Takeaway:  Heaven is for everyone, but offered through us.  We are to be the influences that grow the kingdom.

 Reflection Questions:
  • Are you growing with God or away from God?
  • What kind of influence do you have with those around you?  For God or against?
